ON ISLAND
Navigator Homes of Martha's Vineyard
Setting a New Standard for Skilled Nursing Care
By Carly Ring & Danielle Dean
A new chapter in elder living is coming to Martha’s Vineyard. Navigator Homes of Martha’s Vineyard, a nonprofit skilled nursing community, is nearing completion and will open its doors in early 2026. Designed as a home first and a care facility second, Navigator Homes offers Island residents a way to remain close to the people, places, and rhythms they love while receiving the support they need.
The community is composed of five small homes, each designed for 14 residents in private suites with en-suite baths. Shared living spaces, open kitchens, and gardens create opportunities for residents to gather, socialize, and maintain a sense of connection. Every detail has been carefully considered to create a comfortable, welcoming environment that feels like home.
Navigator Homes will become the new home for residents and staff of Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Every current Windemere resident, regardless of income, is guaranteed a place in the new community. This ensures continuity of care and preserves the relationships that residents and staff have built over the years.
The project has been the focus of years of planning, effort, and dedication by the Navigator Homes Board, who have poured unbelievable efforts into bringing this vision to life. Martha’s Vineyard Hospital has been the community’s biggest supporter, providing guidance and encouragement every step of the way. Alliance Health Management Services has joined the effort to help ensure the community thrives and residents receive the highest level of care.
At the center of the campus, a shared green space with walking paths, gardens, and porches provides residents with opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and engage with one another. Home-cooked meals are served family-style, staff are consistent and familiar, and daily life is paced to honor individual routines and preferences.
Navigator Homes offers 24/7 skilled nursing and rehabilitation services, but it is defined as much by its atmosphere as by its care. It provides a place where residents can continue to live meaningful lives, surrounded by the community they helped build. Aging on Martha’s Vineyard does not mean leaving the Island. At Navigator Homes, it means staying at home.
