Vineyard Gardens
Enjoys a 30-Year Legacy of Transforming Vineyard Landscapes
By Diane Alter
For more than three decades, Vineyard Gardens has been a horticultural cornerstone on Martha’s Vineyard; offering personalized landscaping and garden center services with a commitment to native flora and sustainable design.
Led by Chuck Wiley, a lifelong plant enthusiast and expert in plant identification, the company combines decades of botanical expertise with a passion for creating unique outdoor spaces that reflect each client’s vision.
Founded in 1979, while Chuck was pursuing a degree in Plant and Soil Science at the University of Vermont, Vineyard Gardens began as a small, community-based operation. Over time, it has grown into one of the Island’s most trusted landscaping companies, known for its attention to detail and collaborative approach.
Whether it’s crafting lush gardens or manicured lawns, each project is approached with a deep understanding of the Island’s diverse flora and a commitment to working with nature rather than against it.
One of Chuck’s proudest achievements is Vineyard Gardens’ ability to transform ordinary spaces into personal oases using native plants that thrive in Martha’s Vineyard’s coastal conditions. His favorite plant, the American Holly, exemplifies this philosophy–an adaptable evergreen that withstands shade, drought, deer, and even salt spray, making it ideal for the Island’s diverse environment.
“My love for this plant came from my mother, an avid gardener,” Chuck says. “It’s a reminder that beauty and resilience can go hand in hand.”
Chuck takes a meticulous, property-by-property approach when selecting plants for his clients. The American Holly is a favorite in his arsenal due to its resilience and ability to support local wildlife. “There’s a growing trend toward planting natives,” Chuck explains. “Many people want plants that support wildlife, and American Holly fits that bill perfectly.”
He also keeps a close eye on state regulations, which periodically update the list of plants that can no longer be sold. One such example is miscanthus, a beautiful and deer-resistant ornamental grass that is now being phased out due to its invasive potential.
Beyond plant selection, Chuck emphasizes the importance of proper soil preparation, which he believes yields long-term benefits. “Preparing the soil is an investment,” he says. “But it’s a ten-year investment that will reduce the need for water and fertilizer.”
Soil plays a vital role in plant growth by providing essential nutrients, water, and air. Proper soil preparation, including composting, aerating, and pH testing, creates an ideal environment for plants to thrive and produce healthy blooms or crops.
Chuck’s passion for birdwatching also informs his plant choices. “Red flowers, like clerodendron, are great for attracting birds,” he shares, always eager to bring his love for wildlife into his work. Community plays a crucial role in Vineyard Gardens’ success, as the company thrives on strong local relationships and a deep connection to the Island’s culture. Vineyard Gardens is not just a business; it’s an integral part of Martha’s Vineyard’s social fabric. The support they receive from the community stems from their long-standing presence, participation in local events, and commitment to nurturing both gardens and relationships.
Chuck’s wife, Christine, a longtime educator on the Island, has also helped build strong ties within the community. Many of her former students and their families remain loyal customers, contributing to the company’s ongoing success.
Vineyard Gardens actively participates in local festivals and events, which bolsters its visibility and strengthens community bonds. The company isn’t just about offering quality products and services–it’s about being a trusted, integral part of the Island’s lifestyle.
The next generation of the family business is led by Chuck’s son, Andrew, who has interned at some of the world’s finest gardens in England and Europe. Andrew’s global experience keeps Vineyard Gardens at the forefront of horticultural trends in landscape design and plant care. “Andrew’s knowledge is phenomenal–off the charts,” Chuck says proudly.
When Chuck isn’t working in the garden, he enjoys exploring the Island’s natural beauty through birdwatching and nature walks. His passion for horticulture extends into his personal life as well, where he is an avid vegetable gardener. “Salad is my go-to food,” he jokes. “It’s one of the few things I can eat in abundance and still stay relatively thin.”
With a love for all things green and growing, Chuck and his team at Vineyard Gardens provide comprehensive services ranging from consultation and design to installation and maintenance. For Chuck, work is more than just a job–it’s a lifelong passion.
“I love to talk,” Chuck admits with a smile. “When I meet a new customer who’s really into flowers, plants, or vegetable gardens, I can talk forever.”
