MADE ON ISLAND

Archie Robertson
Channeling His Artistic Creative Spirit
For Archie Robertson his fine art painting was a long percolating creative drive that was always aching to emerge.
Archie was a washashore newcomer from the sunny Caribbean island of Bequia, part of the country of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. For five years Archie was a pizza maker for the legendary Primo Lombardy at the Up-Island Chilmark Store.
Archie eventually started his own commercial house painting business, which thrives on this Island due to the constant growth in the home building industry.
But always, for Archie, there was the urge to take painting to a more creative level. Archie started to take time to persue an inner desire to create paintings and multi-media pieces for his sheer enjoyment. Along the way Archie has accumulated a body of work that is ever-evolving, expanding and improving. His acrylic paintings are displayed on canvas and wood panels sometimes with custom made frames. The wood panels add a rough, or semi-rough, surface which adds to the over-all imagery.
“I enjoy the relaxing feeling I get from painting, and the satisfaction I feel when I look at my finished work.” Archie says, “I wish I had more time to paint.”
Archie’s paintings are mostly abstract, incorporating a combination of a dripping and splattering technique. He finds inspiration from the physical world of land and seascapes, using droplets and brush strokes of color to represent earth, sky and ocean. Archie has also experimented with some metalwork and reclaimed objects.
“I admire the style of Jackson Pollock, and many others, using the technique of dripping and swirling paint to create layers and texture to form a visual reality,” he explains.
Archie’s paintings speak for themselves and lets the viewer interprete them as they will.
Archie’s work has been shown at Mocha Mott’s Coffeehouse in Vineyard Haven, and he has since been invited back. He enjoyed a one-man show at the Vineyard Haven Library and Featherstone which was well received.
For the future Archie would like to find more and more time to work on his body of work and eventually find a gallery to someday show and sell his work.
