MADE ON ISLAND

Marston Clough
Painting the Island

Marston Clough took his first art classes on Martha’s Vineyard, where he was born and raised. Now a successful landscape painter, he can credit his renewed sense of the Island’s splendor to his work. “I grew up on the Vineyard and though I always appreciated it, I think painting has made me notice things in a new way,” Marston says.

Though he paints landscapes and seascapes, Marston’s goal isn’t to recreate an exact scene. “I often am not trying for a specific place but am trying to appreciate, on canvas, the beauty around us,” he explains. He captures that beauty with color: the way the clouds meet the water, or a pasture, and the horizon lines that are created.

When it comes to materials, Marston isn’t selective. “I can’t resist trying most mediums, actually,” he says. “I love line art for certain things, and started with drawing and etching before I started doing colored monotypes.” He now works mostly with oils on canvas, and sometimes on panels and wood blocks.

Marston’s work is shown at the Old Sculpin Gallery in the summer and fall, the Friends of Family Planning Memorial Day Art Show, and Featherstone. Many of his paintings may also be viewed on his website, www.marstonclough.com.
