Since opening our office on Martha’s Vineyard in 1983, we at MacNelly Cohen Architects have taken great pleasure in designing projects for the variety of contexts presented to us, from simple farmhouse to Shingle Style or Greek Revival.

While our primary focus has been on residential projects, our recent work has also included public buildings, including the Chappaquiddick Community Center, the Featherstone Meetinghouse for the Arts, the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School, and the new offices for the Martha’s Vineyard Financial Group.

In all of our projects we consider the making of rooms to be at the core of our work. Thus, in considering how best to accommodate the life to take place in a given space, we study the room in all its aspects - from its function and efficiency, to its poetry; from its underlying geometry, to the kind of light it will play host to; and from its relationship to other rooms in the house, to its connection with the landscape outside. We like to think that the character of the place will be best conveyed by these considerations, with particular materials and details serving to complement them.
